Revision 1.7 - (show annotations) (download)
Thu Feb 6 19:08:32 2003 UTC (17 years, 7 months ago) by hinshaw
Branch: MAIN
CVS Tags: skandha4_pub, skandha4_1_6, skandha4_1_6_pub, HEAD
Changes since 1.6: +7 -7 lines
Clarified the "make depend" step, which should be necessary only if
you change the modules file. (Now that there are separate branches
for pub vs the full version, the different sets of makefile
dependencies are stored on their respective branches.)

Installation Steps
------------------

1. From the main skandha4 directory, run "bin/Sconfigure <arch>", where
<arch> is one of the architectures for which there is a file in the
`systems' subdirectory. For example:

bin/Sconfigure linux-mesa

If you don't see your architecture listed, copy one of the existing
files and edit the settings to match your machine's setup.

2. Go into the directory for the application you want to compile.
("sl" is the basic slisp application, "skandha4" is a more complex
graphics application.) For example:

cd skandha4

3. To create the appropriate makefiles for this application, run:

../bin/Smake

4. To delete any stray detritus it doesn't hurt to run:

make distclean

5. If you have changed the list of modules in skandha4/modules, you
may need to run:

make depend

6. Now, start the compilation:

make all

7. Make a cup of coffee; drink it. Slowly.

8. If this succeeds, you should now have the application installed in
skandha4/bin/. You can run it directly out of that directory. For
example:

../bin/skandha4

9. To exercise the application's test code, run:

make check

Note that "make check" expects to find skandha4 in your path.
If you are compiling for the first time, you should make sure that it does.
For example, you could make a link in you ~/bin directory:

ln -s ~/src/skandha4/bin/skandha4 ~/bin/skandha4

10. If you want to install the application in /usr/local/bin, become
root and run:

make install

11. Enjoy!
